KATRA, December 1: The 81st Annual Conference of Indian Society of Agricultural Economics, hosted by Faculty of Management, SMVDU with NABARD & ICSSR, was inaugurated today at SMVD University.
This year the conference themes were the impact of the Covid pandemic and farmers’ protest on agriculture, nutrition security and agro-entrepreneurship and innovations.
The main guest, Prof. Yoginder K Alagh, Chancellor of the Central University of Gujarat, emphasized the generation of theories in the context of agriculture.
Professor RK Sinha, Vice-Chancellor of SMVDU, discussed the contribution of agriculture to the economy during the COVID-19 era. ISAE Secretary Dr CL Dadhich spoke about the genesis of the Indian Agricultural Economics Society for Agricultural Economics Research and Education. ISAE President Professor Abhijit Sen and Niti Ayog discussed the negative impact of COVID-19 on the agricultural sector and its performance.
Dr AK Sood, CGM, NABARD, who was the guest of honor, underlined their importance for sustainable development and the rural agricultural sector. Conference Chairman Dr Madhura Swaminathan, Professor, Economic Analysis Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore, spoke about the challenges Agrarian India faces.
The keynote address on Covid and the Agricultural and Rural Economy was delivered by Dr R Ramakumar, Professor, TISS, Mumbai, while Professor CP Chandrasekhar (Retired Professor) Jawahar Lal University, gave a keynote address on the topic of agricultural reforms and protests by farmers. Dr KR Ashok, Agricultural University of Tamil Nadu gave his speech on the link between agriculture and nutrition while Prof. JP Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST-Jammu gave his speech on the role of entrepreneurship agrifood, innovation and value chains / networks in improving farmers’ incomes.
The ISAE and ISAE Fellow Award for the best book on agricultural economics, published by Indian authors, went to Dr Shashi R Sen for his book âLand Acquisition and Resource Development in Contemporary Indiaâ.
The dignitaries included Professor Judith Heyer of Oxford; Prof. Surjit Vikraman, NIRDPR, Hyderabad; Dr Mekhala Krishnamurthy, Ashoka University; Dr Niti Mehta, SPIESR, Ahmadabad; Dr Sukhpal Singh, IIM-Ahmedabad and other prominent researchers and practitioners.
Previously, Dr Supran Sharma, Dean, Faculty of Management, SMVDU; Dr Ashutosh Vashishtha, Coordinator and Dr Saurabh, Director of Business School, SMVDU and Local Organizing Secretary, Meenakshi Gupta, welcomed the dignitaries and participants.
