NYCFC II MLS NEXT Pro Schedule, Venue Announced

NYCFC II will play their first-ever competitive match on Sunday, March 27, when the Young Pigeons host New England Revolution II at Belson Stadium on the campus of St. John’s University in Queens.

This won’t just be the New York City FC affiliate’s debut, it will be the first 24-game regular season for MLS PRO Next.

St. Johns and NYCFC have a long-standing partnership, as the NYCFC Academy has used the site since 2016. Belson Stadium also hosted the first team when NYCFC beat North Carolina 4-0 in the US Open Cup 2019.

NYCFC II will play in the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference. One element that will spill over from MLS is Heineken Rivalry Week, during which teams are paired up to maximize fanfare and hype. As the New Jersey Red Bulls won’t field an MLS Next Pro team until 2023, NYCFC II is hilarious with RNY FC, a team that was known until recently as the (much catchier) “Rochester Rhinos”. Leicester City FC talisman Jamie Vardy is co-owner of RNY FC. Three games are scheduled for what could be called the Empire State Derby: NYCFC II will visit Rochester twice, and the Young Pigeons will host the Rochester Rhinos once on the artificial turf pitch at Belson Stadium.

NYCFC II will not play against any Western Conference teams during the regular season. The full 2022 regular season schedule is below. There will be playoffs, but the format and dates are yet to be determined.

Tickets for home games will cost between $10 and $15, while St. John’s students and faculty can purchase tickets for $5 on game days with current SJU proof of ID. Most matches will take place on a Saturday or Sunday.

Although MLS NEXT Pro may be a developmental league, it is important to show up and show your support for future senior team players. Will you attend matches? Does “Junior Pigeons” work as a nickname? Is NYCFC II vs Rochester Rhinos a worthy rivalry? Post your thoughts in the comments below.
