Egypt to host international anti-corruption conference

Egypt is expected to host the ninth session of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC / COSP9) in Sharm el-Sheikh from December 13 to 17, 2021.

The conference is considered to be one of the most important international conferences that brings together member states, parliamentarians, international, regional and non-governmental organizations, civil society and the private sector, to discuss anti-corruption issues.

It will revise the United Nations Convention against Corruption, which is the only legally binding universal anti-corruption instrument.

According to the Egyptian state-run Middle East News Agency (MENA), participants will discuss ways to prevent and reduce corruption, strengthen international cooperation to better combat all forms of corruption, and discuss ways to recover from the pandemic and move forward after the first United Nations General Assembly Special Session Against Corruption (UNGASS) held in June.

The conference will address various relevant topics, including preventing corruption through education and the role of women in promoting integrity, the Stolen Asset Recovery Initiative, anti-corruption efforts in Africa, the Arab Network for Combating Corruption and Integrity, and the challenges and opportunities offered by ICTs and digitization to combat corruption and urban governance initiatives aimed at reducing corruption.

Cairo underlined during its participation in the special session of the General Assembly in June on the importance of strengthening international and regional cooperation in the area of building human, technical and technological capacities to prosecute corruption crimes.

Egypt said its participation in the activities of the special session reflected “the concern to strengthen efforts to fight corruption being a harmful scourge that undermines development efforts,” said the foreign ministry.
