Armenia foils Azerbaijan’s propaganda event at UN conference against corruption in Egypt – Armenia public radio

The Armenian delegation led by Attorney General Artur Davtyan foiled an anti-Armenian event organized by Azerbaijan within the framework of the 9th session of the Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) underway in Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt, Armenpress reports.

During the event titled “Embezzlement of Fundraising Activities for Corruption and Related Criminal Purposes”, the Azerbaijani delegation attempted to label the Armenian organizations as institutions financing terrorism and to present the achievement of the right of the people of Artsakh to self-determination as well as of “separatism” and “terrorism”.

In an abuse of the platform, Azerbaijani delegates began to discredit Armenia, the Republic of Artsakh, Armenian organizations and individuals in the diaspora instead of addressing the manifestations of endemic corruption in their own country. .

To give legitimacy to the event, the Azerbaijani delegation decided to use the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in its political speculations, inviting UNODC representatives to participate in the thematic debate by as speakers. In addition, without the permission of the UNODC Secretariat, Azerbaijan used the logo of the structure on the event material in an attempt to give the impression that UNODC and the 9th session of the UNODC Convention United Nations Against Corruption are co-organizers of the event.

The Armenian delegation took steps to counter Azerbaijani propaganda. In particular, at the request of the Armenian delegation, the UNODC Secretariat requested the Azerbaijani delegation to remove the UNODC logos from all documents related to the event. In addition, at the request of the Armenian delegation, the expert from UNODC, who was supposed to intervene during the thematic discussion, said that the UNODC Secretariat usually provides speakers for relevant events at the request of the representatives. participating countries. He also stressed that the presence of the Secretariat at the event does not in any way mean that UNODC approves the speeches or announcements made at the event.

Armenian Consul in Egypt Rafayel Movsesyan then spoke, strongly criticizing the anti-Armenian event and demanding that Azerbaijan end hate propaganda against famous Armenian organizations and figures who were trying to attract the attention of the international community to the violence against the civilian population of Artsakh, crimes against humanity, violations of international humanitarian law, destruction of Armenian cultural and religious heritage during the 2020 war and the humanitarian crisis created as a result of aggression by Azerbaijan. He reminded Azerbaijan of the December 7 decision of the United Nations International Court of Justice to indicate provisional measures against Azerbaijan, obliging the latter to take measures to put an end to the propaganda of racial hatred and discrimination against persons of Armenian origin, including by officials and public institutions.

A very limited number of foreigners physically participated in the meeting. They left the room immediately after the speech of the Armenian delegates.
